EARLY DETECTION

Breast cancer cannot be prevented, but it can be detected early on with the help of at-home breast exams. Women and men of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month. Establishing regular breast self-exams will increase your chances of detecting lumps and tissue abnormalities early on. Pink Luminous Breast and other forms of breast self-examinations are essential for breast health awareness, but they do not replace the importance of breast exams done by doctors, or breast screenings and mammograms. Pink Luminous Breast is a great self-examination device when used in addition to breast screenings!

WHAT IS BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. It is a result of mutations in the genes that are responsible for regulating the growth of cells and keeping them healthy. In a healthy breast, the cells would replace themselves through an orderly process of cell growth, meaning that a new healthy cell replaces a cell that dies. In an abnormal breast, however, mutations can “turn on” or “turn off” genes in cells, leading these cells to gain the ability to divide without control or order, producing more cells like it. The overproduction of cells leads to a tumor.

When a tumor is not dangerous to your health, it is benign. Benign tumors grow slowly, do not invade nearby tissues, and appear normal in appearanceIf it has the potential to be dangerous to your health, then it is malignant. Malignant tumors are cancerous and can spread beyond the place of origin if left unchecked. 85-90% of breast cancers are due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and the “wear and tear” of life in general.

There are different forms of breast cancer, which depends on the kind of cells in the breast that turn into cancer. The cancer can begin in different parts of the breast, the three main parts including the lobules, ducts, and connective tissue. The lobules are the glands that produce the milk, the ducts are the tubes that carry milk to the nippel, and the connective tissue surrounds and holds everything together. While it can begin in one area, breast cancer can spread throughout the breast through blood vessels and lymph vessels. If it reaches other parts of your body, it has spread, or metastasized.

As stated above, there are different forms of breast. Some forms of breast cancer include Paget’s disease, medullary, mucinous, and inflammatory breast cancer, but the most common kinds of breast cancer include:

  • Invasive ductal carcinoma - This kind of breast cancer grows outside the ducts, spreading into other parts of the breast tissue. This invasive cancer can also spread to other parts of the body.
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma - In this case, the cancer cells spread from the lobules to the breast tissues that are close by, These invasive cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body.

DETECTING BREAST CANCER DURING YOUR BREAST SELF-EXAM

Breast self-exams can be done in four simple ways that will help you determine if you have any breast tissue abnormalities. Self-exams are a great method for detecting breast cancer early on, but they are more effective when they accompany a breast screening. Self-examination is valuable but it is important to remember that a breast screening, like a mammogram, is going to be a more reliable tool for women with an average and higher than average risk of developing breast cancer.

Breast self-examinations are a useful and cost-effective tool, as they are free, can be done on your own time, and help you become more aware of your breast health. Further, they are convenient as they can be done at any age and on a regular basis.

UNDERSTANDING BREAST CANCER

RISKS OF SELF-EXAMS

While there are benefits of breast self-exams and the awareness that comes from doing so, there are also associated risks that should be acknowledged. When you are performing a breast self-exam, try not to become overly anxious. Some of the changes or lumps that women find in their breasts are not cancerous, but the detection of these changes can lead to unnecessary worry and anxiety until you can see your doctor. If you do happen to find a lump, then it is necessary to schedule a breast ultrasound or diagnostic mammogram. These imaging tests should be done before any kind of serious, invasive procedure that may be unnecessary.

We encourage you to perform your own breast self-exams with our Pink Luminous Breast, but self-examination is not an alternative to, or substitute as, a breast exam by your doctor or a screening mammogram. By performing a self-examination and using our breast health awareness device, you are becoming familiar with the look and feel of your breasts, which is great. The act of self-exams, however, cannot replace the value of a breast screening.

BREAST CANCER AMONG MEN

Breast cancer is rare in men, as it is less than 1% of all breast cancers reported. According to BreastCancer.org the lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer in men is about 1 in 833. Men and women both have breast tissue, but men’s bodies don’t make the same amount of breast-stimulating hormones that women do, which is why their breast tissue stays flat. Because breast cancer in men is uncommon, there is not a wealth of research upon the topic. However, there are risk factors that can lead to the development. Some of these include:

  • Growing older
  • High estrogen levels
  • Klinefelter syndrome
  • A family history of breast cancer or genetic mutations
  • Radiation exposure

The symptoms for breast cancer in women is mostly the same for men, including things like:

  • A lump felt in the breast
  • Nipple pain
  • Inverted nipples
  • Sores on the nipple or areola
  • Enlarged lymph nodes under the arm
